Crystal jewellery is beautiful and functional, and every stone has a meaning and purpose. You can buy it with a purpose in mind, or just because it’s pretty! 

What are the Different Types of Crystal Jewellery?

Crystals are usually sold in one of five forms - rough, tumbled, bead, carved, and cut. Each has its own characteristics and pros and cons.

Rough stones are just as they came out of the ground - all that’s done to them is cleaning off any dirt that they had on them. Rough crystals are often believed to be more powerful and connected to the earth than polished or tumbled crystals. Their energy is sometimes held to be purer than stones that have been treated in man-made processes. 

Tumbled or polished crystals are sometimes thought to be more refined, and to give off a softer energy. The process of tumbling them and rounding off the rough edges helps to give tumbled stones a gentle, subtle energy which is easy to wear every day.

Crystal beads are really a variation of tumbled crystals, and are the easiest to wear. At Sorcerers Treasure Trove, we use a lot of crystal beads, and find that they have a beautiful rounded energy.

Carved crystals are usually created with a specific use in mind. Examples include double terminated pendants, which encourage energy to flow in two directions, and pendulums, which focus energy in a very specific point. These shapes also make beautiful crystal jewellery!

Finally, there are cut crystals, which are crystals cut in the way that gemstones would be. These are more often used for jewellery purposes than for their innate properties, but they still carry those qualities within them.

Common Crystals Used in Jewellery

While crystals of all kinds are used for their energy properties, some are not really suitable to be made into jewellery due to softness or other reasons. That still leaves a huge variety of crystals that can be made into beautiful crystal jewellery though! Popular choices for jewellery include:

Rose quartz - exudes a beautiful soft energy. Sometimes called the stone of universal love, it promotes love of both self and others. It has a powerful healing energy.

Smoky Quartz - strong grounding presence. Helps dispel negative energies, and often used for scrying and divination. It can also be used to dispel nightmares.

Amethyst - literally translating to “not intoxicated”, this stone encourages groundedness and calm. Also associated with nobility and regal bearing.

Citrine - holds a vibrant and light energy, this crystal is the epitome of positivity. Great for strength and self confidence.

Howlite - a calming stone, it encourages stillness and wisdom. Helpful for insomnia, especially when the insomnia is caused by overthinking.

Hematite - another grounding, centring stone, hematite is a strong balancing influence. It also stimulates calm and focused thinking.

Sunstone - a stone of abundance and blessing, it is linked to good fortune and luck. It dispels fear and negativity, and replaces it with positive light energy.

Sodalite - encourages rational thought and consideration, and emotional balance. Sodalite is a wonderful stone for highly emotionally charged situations where clarity is needed.

Larimar - the embodiment of soft sea and sky, larimar radiates soft and gentle healing energy. It is full of peace and clear thinking.

Carnelian - a bold stone of action and strength, it is sure to bring courage to the wearer. It is a hot stone, rather than a cool calming one.

Dalmatian stone - a cleansing stone that breaks down unhealthy or no longer needed barriers, and dispels mistrust.

Agate - stabilising and strengthening, agate is a gentle, low vibration stone that is great for balance and perceptiveness.

Onyx - a protective stone that provides shelter against adversaries, onyx was often believed to be bad luck, but can be harnessed to provide protection to the wearer. Common in Victorian mourning jewellery, it represents the passing over of loved ones and can be used to release grief.

Obsidian - a volcanic glass that can be beautifully smooth or honed to a razor edge, obsidian is a strongly protective stone that absorbs negative energy and provides psychic protection.

Lapis lazuli - a symbol of power, royalty and honor. Wearers of this stone will find it channels wisdom and truth, and aids in good judgement.

Turquoise - a strongly protective and soothing stone, turquoise is associated with purification and personal protection. 

Amazonite - a soothing stone, it helps to balance energies and see both sides of a problem or situation. 

Malachite - a protective stone that absorbs negative energies and promotes healing. The deep natural green of malachite is associated with spiritual growth.
